CrunchBase Adds 13,689 Companies and 1,462 Venture Rounds in May, Download in Excel

A little over a month ago, we released a version of the CrunchBase dataset in a simple Excel spreadsheet. Why? We wanted to make CrunchBase more accessible and give everyone a chance to run their own analysis. After receiving tons of positive feedback, we’ve decided to release monthly updates because the dataset keeps growing. In May, nearly 10k users made over 43k edits to the database and data keeps flowing in from the CrunchBase Venture Program which now includes over 160 venture firms, angel groups, and incubators. Thanks to the community, CrunchBase has added 1,462 new venture rounds and 13,689 new companies.

Today we are releasing the May Excel Export Sheet where you will find charts and graphs that show recent investments, acquisitions, IPOs, and more. Though the charts and graphs focus on May’s data, the spreadsheet includes historical data on all US based companies that have received funding.

A few notes on US companies receiving funding in May (see spreadsheet for details):

  • There were 168 Angel Rounds, 107 Series-A, 40 Series-B, and 43 Series C+
  • The SF Bay Area took home $1.25B in funding, coming in second was New York with $233M
  • Biotech raised $1B, Software raised $511M, Hardware raised $177M

CrunchBase is good, but certainly not perfect. If you find information that is incorrect or missing, please submit updates to the CrunchBase website – any registered user can make changes. Together we can make CrunchBase the definitive database of companies, entrepreneurs, and investors in the technology industry.
