We're excited to announce Crunchbase's new current valuation data: a continuously refreshed, explainable estimate of what private companies are worth today.
Gauging private company value has traditionally meant relying on post-money valuation, which captures a company's value when a funding round closes. Our current valuation data gives you something even better: a live view of the private market as it evolves. Across roughly 230,000 funded private companies, you can watch value move between rounds and act on emerging momentum in real time.
Current valuation is built on the post-money valuation data we released earlier this year, which now covers more than 457,000 funding rounds and gives every estimate a reliable historical anchor. It's the latest step in our continued investment in a more complete, accurate view of private company value, so you can make strategic decisions with greater confidence.
Strengthen Opportunity Screening and Due Diligence
Our current valuation data reveals shifts in estimated company value even when funding and secondary transactions are sparse, often before the next round is announced.
For investors and financial services teams, that means a stronger foundation for the decisions that matter most. You can pressure-test internal marks against an independent benchmark, monitor portfolio companies between financing events, and prioritize diligence on the opportunities that warrant it. Because estimates refresh as new information arrives, each with a last-updated timestamp, you're working from a current view rather than a snapshot that may be years old.
Current valuation also strengthens pre-diligence. Because VC firms invest in only a small fraction of the companies they evaluate, identifying the strongest candidates early is critical. With current valuation, you can understand a company's estimated value, its key drivers, and how it compares to peers before the first meeting, reducing time spent on manual research and conversations that don't advance. Viewed alongside Crunchbase's post-money valuations, market insights, and Predictions, this data helps you prioritize where to focus next.
Understand the Reasoning Behind Every Estimate
A valuation is only useful if you can trust it. Our users have told us as much: across our existing Predictions, seeing why a model reached its conclusion has been one of their most requested features. So we built that transparency into current valuation from day one. Every estimate comes with the context you need to judge it for yourself, so you know exactly what's behind each number.
That context includes:
- Current valuation estimate: A model-estimated point value of what a company may be worth today.
- Valuation range: An estimated range reflecting the bounds of company value supported by the available data.
- Confidence tier: An indicator of the strength of the information used to generate the estimate.
- Supporting reasons: The major categories of information influencing the estimate, including financial, industry, market equity, miscellaneous, and comparable-company signals.
- Historical valuation context: The most recent funding round, amount raised, series, and post-money valuation used as historical anchors.
- Last-updated timestamp: When the estimate was most recently generated.
Together, these outputs help you understand what a company may be worth, but how to interpret the estimate. Confidence tiers (high, medium, or low) reflect the strength of the supporting information, with higher confidence represented by a tighter valuation range. Supporting reasons reveal which financial, company, and market signals are influencing the estimate, including whether they contribute positively or negatively.
Valuation comparables add another layer of transparency, showing the peer companies and revenue multiples that inform it. Rather than relying on an unexplained benchmark, you can examine the companies behind the comparison and assess how well they reflect your own view.
A Broader, More Accurate Valuation Benchmark
Current valuation already covers roughly 230,000 funded private companies, about 15 times the ~15,000 companies in PitchBook's published release. And we'll keep building on that lead, expanding coverage further as our underlying valuation data continues to grow.
Our current valuation data also performs where it counts. The model achieves 26% median absolute percentage error (MdAPE) or better across approximately 80,000 companies, and 31% or better across a broader population of 150,000 companies. MdAPE is a standard valuation-model performance metric where lower percentages indicate estimates closer to observed valuations.
Every estimate also undergoes automated validation and plausibility checks against known company, funding, and market conditions. Built on Crunchbase's 457,000+ post-money valuations and proprietary private market intelligence, current valuation extends a consistent benchmark to more private companies, including emerging businesses where valuation information can be difficult to obtain. And because Crunchbase distinguishes confirmed from estimated post-money valuations, you have greater transparency into the historical data informing the model.
Use Current Valuations Wherever You Work
You can bring current valuation data directly into your AI tools through the Crunchbase MCP or incorporate them into your custom builds and products with our API. That means AI agents and LLM answer engines can pull directly from our estimates, ranges, and confidence tiers, while the API lets you build that same data into your own applications and models.
For example, you can ask your AI assistant what a company may be worth today, how that compares with its historical valuation, and what's driving the difference. You can also put agents to work bringing valuation context into investment research, portfolio reviews, and strategic analyses.
Here's how different teams can use our private company valuations:
- Investors and financial services teams: Monitor portfolios, screen deals, and strengthen internal valuation models, or ask an AI agent to flag meaningful shifts in estimated value across your portfolio using the Crunchbase MCP.
- Corporate development and strategy teams: Benchmark acquisition targets earlier, and bring valuation and comparable company context into target briefs and market scans.
- Market researchers and analysts: Compare relative value across markets and stages, and pressure-test internal assumptions with modeled estimates, confidence tiers, and comparables.
- Sales and GTM teams: Add current company value to account research to spot companies worth further qualification.
- Product builders: Integrate estimates, ranges, and supporting context into your own applications and products through the API.
