From Sourcing to Screening: How AI Agents Are Reshaping Deal Discovery

Investors often determine within minutes of a founder conversation whether a company fits their investment focus. Sourcing tools have expanded coverage of the startup landscape, but initial screening remains labor-intensive and often incomplete, and investors spend many meetings simply establishing basic fit. These sourcing channels are also static: they identify startups at a single point in time, which requires teams to repeat the work continually.

Crunchbase’s partnership with Exa changes that, bringing sourcing and screening together into a single workflow. Now, investors can better understand company fit even before the first conversation, and they can monitor changes on an ongoing basis.

Turning a thesis into research questions

Exa and Crunchbase combine private market data with web search, enabling investors to translate an investment thesis into specific research questions. The investor defines the criteria, and an agent gathers information across the company list for review. This makes it possible to apply detailed screening to companies that would otherwise be too numerous to research individually. Sourcing, in other words, becomes active screening.

Consider a search for Seed and Series A AI inference startups that are led by repeat founders, serve enterprise customers, and are hiring faster than average. Crunchbase identifies companies at the relevant stage, establishes founders’ backgrounds, and outlines their products and services. Exa then looks for evidence of customer adoption and hiring trends, and adds depth on product strategy. Investors can ask which companies have documented production deployments, who those customers are, and what problems they are solving. Each answer narrows the list according to the firm’s actual investment criteria.

Putting it into practice

Standard filters only narrow a list so far; the criteria that define real fit are harder to screen for. In preparing for our October webinar, we began with a pool of 8,900 AI infrastructure companies globally. Narrowing that pool to AI inference startups at Seed and Series A still left 288 companies. Product strategy, founder fit, and external indicators of momentum all remained to be assessed, which is work that traditionally requires hours of manual research or a series of founder meetings.

This is where an agent changes the equation. During a recent webinar with Exa, we applied this approach to a list of AI orchestration companies led by repeat founders. We asked the agent to investigate the products those companies had launched over the previous six months. It returned a company-by-company report that combined those product developments with Crunchbase growth indicators. The result was an assessment of product strategy and momentum across the entire list, completed without the manual research that would otherwise have required.

From one-time sourcing to continuous monitoring

The same criteria can also indicate when a company merits a second look. If a firm passes because a product is still in testing, a subsequent customer deployment may warrant reconsideration. If a company’s product serves a market outside the firm’s core focus, a new offering aimed at the firm’s target customers could change its thesis fit. Documenting why a company was not a fit creates a defined set of developments to monitor, and Exa Monitors can run recurring searches to surface them. A company passed on six months ago may be worth meeting today.

Continuous sourcing also helps investors identify patterns across the market. Several companies announcing integrations with the same business may signal an ecosystem forming around an overlooked company. Overlapping product launches may reveal an emerging competitor. These signals give investors reason to look beyond their original list and to reexamine assumptions about where opportunity lies.
