API News : Search and Filter Organizations!

  • 2 min read

On June 24th of this year, we released v2 of the CrunchBase API. Since that release, we’ve had over 2,800 developers sign up. Our ongoing dialog with this fantastic community has helped us identify issues and prioritize our API product roadmap.

Above all, developers want smarter ways to access Organization information. Until today, the only way to get a subset of the 250k+ Organizations was to get them all and go through them, one-by-one, casting aside the ones that didn’t match specific criteria. This is inefficient and frustrating.

API v1 has a very basic “search” feature, and a large number of developers are still using it. In fact, many developers can’t migrate their applications to API v2 because it lacks search.

Given the existing search feature in v1, we could have built a simple search for v2. We knew, however, that text search alone wasn’t sufficient. Developers wanted fine-grained filters, and those requests made sense to us.

To that end, we’ve built what we think is an extremely solid MVP for search and filter. With today’s release, developers now have the ability to do the following:

Search Organizations

  • Perform a general text search (name, prior names, domain name, and locations)
  • Search by domain name
  • Search by name

Filter Organizations

  • Filter by one or more Locations (today this means Cities)
  • Filter by one or more Categories
  • Filter by one or more Organization Types (company, investor, school, or group)

To support filtering Organizations, we’ve also added two additional features to the API:

  • List all Locations
  • List all Categories

We think that these search and filter features bring tremendous additional value to the API. As always, we want to hear your feedback. Take a look at our updated API Documentation, experiment with the new features, and let us know what you think.
