Deep Dive: SimilarWeb Looks at Top Companies by Crunchbase Rank

Crunchbase Rank uses algorithms to rank companies in the dataset with real-time analysis of factors such as funding data, recent news, connections, and profile traffic. It’s no surprise then that the likes of Airbnb, Fitbit, SpaceX, Twitter, and Alibaba often place highly on this list.

Market intelligence firm, SimilarWeb, recently took a deeper look into the 50 companies as listed by Crunchbase Rank to see what they’re doing right across multiple digital channels.

Some of the highlights of the study:

  • Ten of the 12 highest ranked sites receive less than 50% of their traffic from the U.S. Overall, the more successful US-based companies have cultivated a non-US audience. Facebook, for example, receives only 18% of its traffic from the U.S.
  • From 2015 – 2017, online shopping site aliexpress.com (Alibaba) shifted its traffic strategy from display ads to organic search, social, and direct traffic, which decreased its overall quantity of traffic but increased its quality
  • While the Pandora Music app dominates mobile with a 28% installation rate on Android devices, Spotify Music drives more user engagement at 35 min/day with Pandora at 24 min/day

SimilarWeb is an intelligence firm that provides companies with insight into their digital market share. By analyzing mobile apps and websites, companies can get an in-depth look at factors like global reach, sources of traffic, and mobile app engagement.
